Governor’s Cup at Fallen Oak raises $2.75 million for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast

BILOXI, Miss. – May 7, 2007 – The second-annual Governor’s Cup of Mississippi announces it has raised a record $2.75 million for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast.

The Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, which owns Fallen Oak, donated the Tom Fazio-designed course and underwrote the entire tournament cost to allow for 100 percent of the proceeds raised to go directly to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast.

Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway, Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Gray Swoope, Carolyn Shanks, CEO of Entergy; Grandville Smith, RW Development; and Jim McArther, Yates Construction, raised the winner’s trophies Monday at the first high-profile golf event ever held at Fallen Oak. Limited to 18 teams of five golfers, each of the 90 golfers participating in this year’s event paid $3,000 for the opportunity to play Fallen Oak and attend a pre-tournament reception hosted by Beau Rivage and First Lady Marsha Barbour.

Governor Barbour and Tom Fazio served as co-chairs for the event. A longtime benefactor of the Boys and Girls Clubs, Fazio donated $1 million from his foundation. Fazio personally visited with each of the 18 teams, freely dispensing tips on how to navigate the challenging course and answering questions on any and all topics. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to co-chair an event that will benefit so many people on a course that will provide so many memories for those who play it,” Fazio said. “That the Boys and Girls Clubs are this year’s beneficiaries makes the experience that much more meaningful to me because the organization has meant so much to me over the years.”

“That this event can raise a staggering sum like $2.75 million in such a short time frame is a testament to all of the people involved and their willingness to donate their time, money and efforts to worthy causes in our state,” said Governor Barbour. “This is a magnificent course, and I am proud and honored to have this event here because of what it means to the people of South Mississippi and their hard-fought efforts to recover from Hurricane Katrina.”

Another $1 million came Mississippi Power, under the leadership of president and CEO Anthony Topazi.

That Fallen Oak’s first high-profile golf event in its young life proved to be such a charitable bonanza means a great deal to Beau Rivage President George Corchis. “When you combine a beautiful setting with great minds, caring individuals and a worthy cause, you certainly have a recipe for success,” said Corchis. “When it was first proposed that Fallen Oak host the Governor’s Cup, we could not say ‘Yes’ fast enough.”

The Governor’s Cup festivities included practice rounds at Fallen Oak, a First Lady’s Reception honoring players and their guests in Beau Rivage’s Magnolia Ballroom, limousine transportation to the course for breakfast and an 18-hole schamble, followed by an awards reception in the Fallen Oak clubhouse.

In its short life, the Governor’s Cup has rapidly become one of the most dynamic and prolific charitable events in Mississippi. The Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation established by Governor Barbour, presented the tournament. The Fund has raised more than $32 million dollars from individuals, organizations, and corporations to provide recovery assistance for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The fund contributed $750,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast.

MGM MIRAGE’s second collaboration with renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio, and a sister course to Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Fallen Oak opened in November 2006 and quickly vaulted to the front ranks of Southeastern golfing experiences. Already recognized among the top 10 new courses in the United States by Golf Magazine, Fallen Oak features dramatic elevation changes – which is rare for a Gulf Coast course – and more than 4,000 stately oaks, magnolias, pines and other hardwood trees. From the moment guests enter the lush and picturesque course through the gated front entrance, they know they are someplace special. Beau Rivage guests find a round at Fallen Oak that delivers an experience that is memorable and unrivaled in the region.

Located on a 510-acre tract at the edge of the DeSoto National Forest, 15 miles north of Beau Rivage, Fallen Oak is available exclusively for guests of Beau Rivage. Greens fees are $200. To make reservations, call (877) 805-4657 or visit www.beaurivage.com.
